The DSA's use of weaponized empathy and the rigid oppressor/oppressed binary is not novel. These are refined versions of propaganda techniques perfected by 20th-century revolutionary movements that led to immense human suffering. The warning sign is not the word “socialist” by itself, and it is not that every socialist movement is identical. The warning is that the National Socialist German Workers Party used populist, worker-centered, anti-capitalist, and victimhood language while building a movement that crushed liberty, demonized enemies, and demanded ideological conformity. Democratic socialism should be judged the same way: not by compassionate branding, but by whether its politics sort people into oppressors and oppressed, normalize coercion, and excuse violence in the name of liberation. Lenin distinguished between "agitation" (stirring mass indignation over immediate injustices to build revolutionary fervor) and "propaganda" (deeper ideological education). Bolshevik agitators pointed to the suffering of workers and peasants to channel empathy into hatred of the "bourgeoisie" and the Tsarist system. This emotional mobilization justified violence and expropriation. DSA and aligned activists do something similar today: highlight real or exaggerated suffering of identity groups to evoke empathy, then redirect it into systemic hatred of "whiteness," capitalism, America, or Israel as inherent oppressors. Marxism framed history as class struggle between oppressors (capitalists) and oppressed (proletariat). This binary justified the dictatorship of the proletariat, purges, and the Gulag. Mao took it further during the Cultural Revolution: struggle sessions publicly humiliated and persecuted "class enemies" (teachers, intellectuals, landlords) based on their "oppressor" status. Red Guards, fueled by propaganda posters and Mao's cult, destroyed cultural heritage in the name of liberating the oppressed. Nazi propaganda created a parallel racial binary — Aryans as victims/oppressed by Jewish "oppressors" and Bolsheviks — to justify persecution and war. DSA's modern version replaces or layers class with race, gender, and identity. The logic remains: label groups as oppressors to legitimize discrimination, cancellation, or violence against them. These propaganda methods do not remain theoretical. In the Soviet Union, they enabled Stalin's terror. In China, Mao's campaigns caused tens of millions of deaths through famine, persecution, and chaos. The binary worldview and emotional manipulation made mass violence psychologically acceptable to participants who saw themselves as righteous liberators. Similar dynamics appear in other revolutionary contexts. When empathy is weaponized and society is reduced to oppressors vs. oppressed, compromise becomes impossible and escalation to coercion or violence becomes "necessary." National Socialism proved that virtuous-sounding mass politics can become authoritarian when a movement defines enemies, mobilizes grievance, and demands ideological submission. DSA presents these tactics as compassionate progressivism. History shows they are recycled tools of division and control that have repeatedly produced tyranny and suffering.
